As a young girl growing up in Jamaica, Nadine Lovemore wanted to write. Unfortunately, she was rarely encouraged to explore her interest in writing. Household and family responsibilities marilouoften kept Nadine away from school for months at a time as an adolescent, and she began to believe that she would never write—because, she was told, she couldn’t.

Nadine never forgot about writing, but her attention was diverted while her life changed quickly during her young adulthood. A difficult transition to the United States at the age of 19 and the birth of her son only 18 months later, presented Nadine with some serious challenges. Nadine found herself feeling trapped in low wage jobs and sub-standard housing conditions—a feeling she didn’t like, and a far cry from how she’d pictured life in the US. So in 2002, at the age of 33, Nadine began studying at Project Hope as a student in the Adult Learner Program. Now, almost five years later, she remembers back on her four years as a student here, and the journey that started back in Jamaica with the little girl who would never write.
